Environmental Monitoring Update

SDC’s Yucwmenlúcwu Environmental Planning & Management Division has been monitoring a pair of bald eagles nesting along the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail, just south of the Farmers Bridge.

This male and female pair — who mate for life — have established two nests in the area. As work continues on the Rail Trail project, including the operation of heavy machinery such as an excavator, our Environmental team has been carefully observing eagle activity to ensure construction activities do not cause significant disturbance.

This monitoring helps protect the nesting pair and reduces the risk of nest abandonment. Protecting wildlife while supporting responsible development remains a priority for Splatsin Development Corporation.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that development and environmental protection go hand in hand,” said Herb Tepper, RPBio, Environment Manager with Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) LLP. “By closely monitoring the eagles during construction, we can help safeguard their nesting area while allowing important community infrastructure work to continue responsibly.”

We appreciate the ongoing work of the SDC Environmental team in upholding our stewardship responsibilities.
