Hullcar Wildfire Fire Guard Rehabilitation Project Update

Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) will begin fire guard rehabilitation activities associated with the Hullcar Wildfire starting June 24, 2026.

Work will begin in the northern portion of the fire area and gradually move south over the next three to four weeks. Rehabilitation efforts will continue onto the slopes overlooking the Salmon River before concluding near the Arbor.

What is fire guard rehabilitation?

During wildfire suppression efforts, firefighters and heavy equipment constructed fire guards to help slow and stop the spread of the fire. Now that these fire guards are no longer needed, rehabilitation work will help restore the affected areas and support the land's recovery.

Using an excavator, crews will:
• Restore natural ground contours
• Repair disturbed soils
• Re-establish natural water flow patterns
• Stabilize steeper slopes using burned logs and grass seed
• Encourage vegetation recovery and ecosystem restoration

The project team will include:
• One excavator and operator
• One Operations Supervisor
• One Ministry of Forests representative

This work is an important step in helping the land recover from wildfire suppression activities while supporting long-term environmental health.
